Christmas tree farm photos

We had a perfect, (warm for November) day to head to the local tree farm and cut down our Christmas tree. This is rare in Minnesota this time of year, so I took full advantage and took what felt like a thousand photos of the kids.

Tree farms are the perfect backdrop for Christmas card photos, and every year I dream about getting the perfect shot while we’re there picking out our tree. Usually the kids are freezing and not in the mood to have their picture taken. Not this year! I got so many sweet smiles, which made me one happy mama!

Here are some of my favorites, along with some of my amateur photography tips…

I shot all of these with my old iPhone 7 Plus. Some of them, like this one was taken using portrait mode, which focuses on the subject and blurs out the background. I love using a preset from Daphne Mae Photography called Marigold. From there, I will usually use the Mobile Lightroom App to raise the exposure and lower the saturation. It’s different for every photo. Then, sometimes I will use the VSCO app to raise the clarity.

I had Jack give Gracie a piggy back ride just to get some fun candid photos. Something I’d seen on Pinterest, of course. It worked well and they thought it was really fun. Lots of laughter.

Who knows what they’re laughing about here, but I made sure I was always shooting to catch these moments. You can always delete photos from your camera roll, but you can’t recreate them once the moment has passed.

I packed a couple different hats and jackets just in case I wasn’t liking the way things were showing up in photos. I also found an area of the tree farm where there weren’t any cars parked in the background or people walking around.

Jack said he wanted to bring this little twig home as a souvenir. I had to take a picture to remember my sweet 8 year old boy. Portrait mode came in handy here.
