A busy mom’s guide to a clean house

First of all, don’t let my blog or Instagram feed fool you. My house gets messy. I have kids who love to build elaborate forts in the living room, eat the messiest snacks, and go in and out of the house a hundred times on muddy spring days. The thing is, it really affects me when I’m surrounded by a mess. I feel out of control and stressed out. So because of that, I just make it a priority to keep the house clean even when life gets crazy. It’s like making the bed every morning. It really does set the tone for the day.

It can definitely be challenging at times, I get it. So I thought I’d share a few cleaning tips that have been helpful for me. These tips help me stay on top of it, and avoid that overwhelmed, “where do I start” feeling.

Have less, clean less…

I’ve found that the less you have, the less work it is to keep it all clean. Less clutter on the kitchen counters, the easier it is to wipe them down. Less stuff on shelves, the easier it is when it’s time to dust. This holds true with the kid’s rooms too. They don’t need a ton of toys. I think that kids feel anxious when they’re surrounded by clutter too. Have you ever purged a bunch of your kid’s toys and set out just a select few? They actually play with them again!

Every few weeks I like to clean out the junk drawer. I usually do it when the kids are at school so they don’t see me tossing all the plastic junk they’ve accumulated. They never miss it. Trust me.

Tidy up as you go, and always before bed…

There is nothing worse than waking up to a sink full of dirty dishes. Especially when you’re running around trying to get the kids ready for school, packing lunches, making coffee. So, as tired as I am sometimes, I always tidy things up before bed. Try to spend just 5 minutes each night straightening things up so you don’t wake up to chaos.

As far as cleaning up as you go, I probably use my cordless Dyson vacuum cleaner 50 times a day. It’s a life saver in the kitchen after snacks and meals. I also use it to vacuum the whole house and it stays charged the whole time!

Do a load of laundry every day

This may sound crazy to some of you, but just do one load of laundry every day to avoid the pile up. This way you won’t have to spend your entire Saturday or Sunday trying to catch up. With kids in sports, they need clean jerseys, baseball pants and leotards for multiple practices and games a week, so I honestly don’t even understand how some moms have one “laundry day”. How?!

Keep your cleaning products simple and natural…

About a year ago I discovered Young Living’s thieves household cleaner and I love it! I use it to clean just about everything! I make laundry detergent with it, wash fruits and vegetables, I make a scrub for cleaning bathtubs and showers (thieves and baking soda), and an all purpose cleaning spray to dust and wipe down countertops. I clean floors with it and even make a glass cleaner with thieves and vinegar.

I’m diffusing a blend called Purification right now! It actually purifies the air while also making the house smell amazing.
